Baking Craftiness

We did get a chance last weekend to make some rye bread, as mentioned previously. The results are amazing. The bread is really good. I believe the PIC said it was the "best bread he's ever had." The second loaf of the batch is pictured because 1. we forgot to take a picture of the first and 2. it looks adorable. It has (well, had) such a nice shape. For those of you who are curious, this recipe, like the previous loaves of tasty bread that we made, comes from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois.

Also from the Snicklefritz oven: chewy granola bars! I've made these a few times before and they are delicious. The recipe comes from the Pillsbury Complete Cookbook (page 430). I came across it a while back when I was looking for things to make for meals that would also have packable leftovers. Of course, I couldn't just skip the cookies and candies chapter. These are great because they could work for either a snack or for breakfast. Yes, breakfast. Don't act like you've never eaten cookies for breakfast. I know that you have. These are a somewhat healthier alternative; there are raisins and oats and peanut butter and sunflower seeds and sesame seeds in there. Plus chocolate chips!
And there's a secret ingredient: sawdust! Shhh. Don't tell anyone!

These maybe don't hold together quite as well as those "Chewy Granola Bars" one may buy at the grocery store, but they are tastier.

So, that's what's cooking over here at the Snicklefritzes'.

Tschau!

Unrelated to your blog post about the baked goods, but what happened to your hippo background? I miss those little guys.
I don't know! They just disappeared a while back and I have yet to put them back (or I should say, the PIC has yet to put them back, as I don't really know much about HTML). I also had some trouble with my posts and had to do a "re-post" of sorts. Weird. But they all seem to be here, except for the hippos.
