2011 Garden Successes

Last year, we tried our hand at gardening. We were a little reassured by the fact that our sand could produce some plants, we started composting to add some nutrients to our sand, and we were totally underwhelmed by our production. We ended up with about two cucumbers, three green peppers, two salads worth of lettuce, some dead pea plants, and dirt under our fingernails.

This year, however, we have read more, learned more, and moved our garden to a sunnier location. So far, MUCH better. Our cuke vines look like champs, our tomatoes are almost as tall as we are, we even got a volunteer tomato plant out of our compost pile and relocated him to the garden, and our basil--just look at how happy those little basil plants are! We've also got some pepper plants just starting to blossom, so we're hopeful on that front too.

We got our tomatoes from a farmer's market in a nearby town, and they include one "stump of the world," two "abe lincolns," and a "black cherry" (That's the one as tall as me!) We also had an early wonder which gave us three or four tomatoes, and gave the squirrels five or six, and then promptly died. I guess it was a REALLY early wonder, in all things.

At any rate, take a look. Give us some pointers. Leave us some comments.

Hi there Crafty Snicklefritzes. I found your blog by a link to YouTube when looking for how to make a leather bound hand-made book. I would suggest that you mulch your plants as they will be much happier with a bit of straw or something similar around the base of them. Coming from Australia, I guess our conditions here are not what you are used to but have you used any fertilisers on your plants? Try to find some good organic fertilisers in pelletised form that should give them a boost. Veggies need HEAPS of fertiliser to get a good crop. They also need enough room to go nuts should they feel the need. I am going to hunt your blog to see if I cant find that hand made book instruction now...
