Here's a little something I made for the PIC's birthday. Yes, I know it's early (his birthday is this Saturday), but I wanted him to have it by his birthday and while I can hide presents, it's a bit more tricky to hide fabric and work on this without him knowing. Herr Snicklefritz is only teaching one class this summer and I'm still working my regular schedule. He's usually home when I am.
Anyhow, we were at the good ol'Hancock and saw this fun piratey fabric (cotton) a while back. The PIC wasn't sure what to do with it but really liked it. Fast forward a few days and I was looking through my library book (thank you, interlibrary loan), Last Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. I came across the pattern for the simple pillowcase and I had a small epiphany. "Why not make a pillowcase for the Partner-in-Crime with that crazy fun pirate fabric?" I thought. It's simple and functional, emphasis on fun!
Speaking of simple, this really is an under two hour gift (except if one has personal fabric inspectors, see Bosco, Fabric Inspector). Basically, just cut out two big rectangles and sew them together. The square skulls fabric was a little misleading when I cut it, though, because the squares do not line up, so my lines always looked crooked. My sewing is much better, but my cutting seemed to have gone pre-K, at least for this project. (True story, I never attended preschool, so maybe that's why I was having trouble cutting in a straight line.) In spite of the wonky cutting, the pillowcase turned out pretty well. Most importantly, the PIC really likes it.
Arr! Now go walk the plank!

What's the "Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts" book like? Worth one's time?
The book is really pretty cool, something I would consider adding to my sewing library. It divides projects by how much time it takes to complete them. The last couple chapters are all quilts (so more time consuming and tricky), but they look really neat.
