After all the hullabaloo of making this skirt, here it is! The fabric is from good ol'Hancock, from the quilter's cotton section. I bought this fabric at the same time as the fabric for my red skirt (Sew What. It's a skirt.) The pattern I used is also the same pattern, the "Singing the Blues" from Sew What! Skirts by Francesca DenHartog and Carole Ann Camp. Well, OK, it's not really a pattern, but more like directions or guidelines to make a skirt. The skirts this books shows how to make are all custom-fit; I have to make my own pattern and draw it out either on the fabric or on paper. For this skirt, I drew right on the fabric (as I did with the first skirt.)
This is a really easy, basic skirt. It is an A-line with a drawstring waist. This skirt is actually a little bit narrower than my red skirt. I didn't make the "A" quite as wide--I couldn't remember the exact angle I used before. I made the drawstring from leftover fabric and added rickrack to the hemline. May I just say that rickrack is no fun to sew onto a hemline? It's kind of blind stitching because I lay the rickrack on top of the edge of the hemline, therefore blocking my view of where the fabric edge is. Plus, the rickrack likes to slide around a little, even though I super-pinify it (the rest of the skirt was pretty easy, so something had to be difficult, right? I mean, other than BOSCO.). I think the effort was worth it, though, because I like the rickrack finish on the hem. Although when I was making it, I realized that this skirt pattern would be pretty simple to embellish--the directions call for a rickrack hemline, but one could easily just add a ribbon, ruffle, or lace, etc.
Alrighty, just have to figure out what to make next!
Until then, tschau!
