I had the idea of wrapping presents in brown paper and then stamping them up. I also thought we (the Partner-in-Crime and I) could include little bird ornaments with everyone's gift. It was the PIC's idea to tie them on the outside of the presents. This is a picture of some of the birds. We weren't finished with all 16 (I think) birds yet when this snap was taken, but I think the general concept is illustrated. If you'd like to see LOTS more pictures of them, you can check out the PIC's Picasa Web Album!
The pattern is from Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. The fabric is just random cottons from a couple local quilting shops and good ol' Hancock. The birds pictured include a bird for my newest sister-in-law (peeping around her package in the bottom left corner), my brother (the orange and blue for the Illini--I know, it's not the right blue; deal.), my oldest brother-in-law (the yellow and black/white for Purdue), my mother-in-law (the bird exposing its red belly), my mom (the black bird with red and yellow flowers), my father-in-law (the blue/red paisley), my bird (the brown floral with pink belly), and my youngest brother-in-law (the checkerboard skulls bird).
Wait, I made a bird for myself? Yep. It was my "see how this pattern works" experimental bird. Hey, the PIC had one for himself, too, but then he gave it away. Also to be noted: the birds for our parents are the same. The mothers received black birds with red bellies and the fathers received paisley birds with blue bellies. We made my grandmother-in-law a reverse of the mother bird (it was red with a black belly). My youngest brother-in-law actually got two birds because we put one with his birthday present (he's not a Christmas baby, but close enough that he sometimes gets gypped).
Also tschuess, bis naechste Mal!

Hooray!
And the flying south comment is fine. :o) In fact, though, some birds don't migrate at all around here. We have flocks of Canada geese everywhere all year 'round.
