Holiday Craftiness...and Happy New Year!

Happy 2009 to everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a good New Year's. The Snicklefritzes enjoyed their holidays; we traveled back to the homeland and visited with family and friends. It's nice to be back home, though, because I can start work on some more projects. Plus, I can finally post about some of the projects I worked on for Christmas. Yay!

I made a handbag for my sister, the ASLTerp, using Simplicity pattern 8331. I made bag style D, which in the Simplicity picture is the yellow and blue plaid bag. Styles C, D, and E are all the same, just different sizes (Style D is the mid-size model). I originally wanted to find some dark/chocolate brown corduroy for the outside of the bag and then use this cute cotton print I already had from Hancock. That didn't work out. Hancock had a tan corduroy, but no chocolate brown, and I wasn't digging the tan much. Then I saw the blue stripe with flowers and decided to go for that. I used some light blue cotton for the bag's lining. This bag was fairly easy to make. I had a better, more enjoyable experience making this bag than my previous Simplicity bag, The (Wonky) Circle Bag. Both this bag and the (W)CB called for fleece interfacing. I opted for flannel. Fleece would make the bag puffier, which is okay, but I always have problems with the fleece stretching more than the cotton when sewing them together. Flannel isn't as stretchy, and I think using flannel works out alright.

I also made a matching modified No Cash Wallet (from Bend-the-Rules Sewing by Amy Karol). I added a key ring loop and a back pocket (not pictured) with Velcro so the sister can keep some change in her wallet. The modifications weren't too tricky. In hindsight, I would probably make the key ring loop a little shorter. Maybe use black thread for the black snap rather than light blue. And how's that change pocket working out for you, Sis? I've mentioned before that sewing for people is kind of stressful for me. I expect the projects/gifts to be practically perfect, mainly because I am the one in control of the sewing. But even though it's stressful, I still like to sew gifts because I think handmade gifts are awesome and the process of making something from scratch is really cool.

So, I hope you liked the bag and wallet, Sis.

Happy New Year! And go get crafting!

Tschau!

I know I've said it before but your craftiness never ceases to amaze me! I hope you enjoyed home, I know I did.

All the best for 2009!

The bag is doing just fine. I've used it a few times now, and it's holding up so far. I notice that you did not mention the description of the bag that Dad used after visiting the Air Force Museum.

Regarding the No Cash Wallet: I suppose you could shorten the length of the key ring loop, but I don't know why. It's not overly long. And it doesn't really matter about the color of the thread for the snap; you used light blue for the rest of the wallet, so why not use it for the snap? I don't mind that it stands it more than black thread would. And, uh, I haven't actually used the change pocket yet, mainly because I haven't yet used the wallet on its own. I've only used it in conjunction with the purse and another wallet, using the No Cash Wallet for my library cards, grocery cards, etc. I can tell you that any change I would put in the coin pocket would likely not come out on its own, because it seems as though you have used industrial-strength Velcro.

Hey, Kim's back!

I was beginning to give up hope on her commenting on this post, and I had been SO anxiously awaiting the reply to Frau Snicklefritze's questions!
I promise that I used regular strength Velcro. The very same Velcro I used for the purse closure.
